The Grotto of the Seven Sleepers

Two kilometres separate the tiny cave network with the intriguing local legend from the Ephesus ruins. Legend has it that in 250 CE, Emperor Decius persecuted seven early Christians and locked them away in this cave.

Two hundred years later, the Christians learned that the Roman Empire had embraced Christianity and that they might now live in peace in Ephesus. After their deaths, they were interred in this cave, which later developed into a well-liked pilgrimage site.

There are only a few tombs inside the cave, but there is a terrace outside the entrance where local women make traditional gözleme (flatbreads), which are great for a dinner after visiting Ephesus.

The ancient town of Limyra
